The Eyes Have It: Wisdom over Love?

Wisdom over love, that is what keeps hearts from being broken. Cole has shattered Phoebe’s heart. Try as she might, her heart still yearns for him, as evidenced from the beginning of this season. To escape her feelings, Phoebe has been working very hard--throwing herself full force into her article and all the public relations aspects that go with being a popular columnist.

Throwing yourself into work or a "special project" in order to forget or numb the hurt your heart has suffered is common. By shutting out the hurt, you are able to continue with your life one day at a time. Eventually, though, the hurt catches up you, and you have to deal with the problem. Since the wound has been covered and festered without any treatment, the outcome can be harsher than if it was dealt with when it first occurred.

Phoebe’s lost touch with her powers from being too involved in work. She has let her "brain override her heart" as Leo so eloquently states.

Being out of touch with her powers is a big problem for any witch, but especially for a Charmed one. Surprising as it was, Phoebe only just realized that she hadn’t been having premonitions as of late. Seeing as this is a major way the Charmed ones deal with the dark forces, it is also a little shocking that neither of her sisters noticed the problem either.

Instead of throwing blame on Phoebe for overworking herself, the sisters decide to help. In reality, helping Phoebe find her powers is important, but only one part of the problem; dealing with a broken heart is something entirely different.

Yes, Phoebe can get help from those around her, but first she must realize that her problem is, indeed, a problem. She has to stop burying her head in the sand and face Cole and their love head on. Running away every time he is present or not discussing the problem will not help to solve her predicament.

Sometimes facing your greatest fear is hard to imagine; yet, inevitably, there comes a moment when you must. Whether or not you have support can make a world of difference. Knowing that her sisters are going to support her, no matter what, should give Phoebe the courage to finally face Cole and her feelings and make a decision.

Whatever the expectations for this episode, they were not met. Many of the viewers hoped to see Phoebe deal with Cole and her feelings, find out where her powers had gone, and get some sort of resolution or continuing storyline for this season. While the issue of Phoebe’s powers was addressed, the resolution was not evident. Yes, she gained some of the powers back, but they now seem to be advancing.

The realization that she was running from her feelings for Cole was not stated, but insinuated. The lack of Cole throughout the entire episode, proved to be disadvantageous in her confrontation with him. Not having Cole present in this episode was unnatural. Knowing that Phoebe must face the problems that she has because of him, it would have been more believable to see him present during this process.

As to an underlying theme for the season, nothing has been shown yet. The only continuing plot from these first five episodes has been Piper’s pregnancy. While, this is an important storyline, it isn’t all consuming, especially since Piper has not begun to show the pregnancy.

So once again, we are lacking a stellar performance from Charmed. The acting ability is there, that is evident. What is left to be desired is a story that is compelling, action packed, and entertaining. We are begging for these changes to occur.

This-and-That:

  • One week Paige is gettin’ jiggy with a boyfriend and the next week she has no friends at all? Is it too much to ask the writers do conform to a little continuity?
  • Everyone was wondering how Piper and Leo would deal with getting a doctor for the baby. Having Eva, a gypsy, as a doctor was great story planning. It will go a long way for the pregnancy storyline; hopefully we will continue to see this character taking care of Piper.
  • So now that Phoebe’s powers are advancing, she may be more susceptible to getting injured? That doesn’t sound like a good advancement.
  • Am I the only viewer that is enjoying Paige’s ability to apply her experiences of becoming a witch to others?
  • Leo tried to get into a fight this week, but was only thrown across the room, maybe next time he’ll at least get in a punch.
  • Understandably, Cole was blamed for many of the events from last season. However, it is disconcerting to continually hear everyone in the Halliwell household blame Cole every time a problem arises.
