To say that this episode is the best Charmed in memory
would be false, and yet it has really left a memorable impact on this viewer.
All the questions and thoughts that had been plaguing the viewers this year
seem to have been resolved in this two-hour season finale.
Chris
As we saw from the season finale last year, Chris came from the future with
unknown reasons throwing the entire Charmed world into mysterious
questions. Was he really Wyatt from the future? Was he there to help the
sisters or hurt them? Why did he have such a bad attitude towards Leo? Why did
he manipulate himself to be the Charmed sister’s whitelighter?
All of these questions were answered throughout the season, something that
the writer’s should take proud credit for. Not only did they reveal a little
at a time, but also they made the entire season exciting and interesting by
revealing little pieces about Chris at a time. When everyone was finally on the
same page that Chris was Leo and Piper’s son, that he was there to keep Wyatt
from becoming evil in the future and that he had a reason to be upset at Leo
everything made sense.
It was because the audience was introduced and played along with the sisters
and Leo about finding out what Chris’ presence in their world was for, that
the audience was able to morn with his “passing” in this episode. While it
broke Leo’s heart to lose Chris, the audience was right there with Leo and
Paige, this only proves that this show has done something in one season that
many shows aren’t able to do; create a character that is loathed, understood,
loved and mourned all in one season.
The questions that I asked in my last review about Chris seem to have been
answered in an indirect manner. Why would Chris come back from the future if
Wyatt never became evil? It was strange to see Chris simply disappear, but it
would come to reason that Gideon’s killing of Chris allowed Leo to tap into
his anger and already put into effect the events that lead to Leo doing an act
of ultimate evil, thus restoring the universe. Therefore, Chris disappearing
when he did would fall into the thought that he could have really not come back
from the future, in a future where Wyatt was not evil. (Understand? If not, I
can explain better if asked)
Leo
A couple of things were interesting and should probably play out to the
continuation of next season concerning Leo and this episode. All season we’ve
seen a tougher more hard side of Leo. Seeing Leo’s alternate from another
dimension only played upon the fact that Leo can, indeed, be evil when he is
trying to protect his family.
This said it does make one question what will happen as repercussions of Leo
killing Gideon? It seems likely that Leo will not be an Elder because of his
acts, but will he remain a whitelighter? Will the Elders allow him to “live”
and be a father, or can they simply take him out of play all together? I mean
he did die years ago.
As a consequence of Leo’s actions of performing an ultimate evil, will he
have side effects that make him go bad? Will next season, we see a Leo who is
suffering from acting out his anger and will it ultimately turn him to the dark
side? These are probably questions that will need to be addressed by the
writers for next season.
Future
Since it is determined that Wyatt was not held captive long enough by Gideon
that he will not become evil, does that mean nothing else will tempt or put
Wyatt towards the evil side? The biggest mystery that seems to come out of this
episode is the fact that there are some Elders that agreed with Gideon’s
thoughts on destroying Wyatt since he has too many powerful powers for any
witch or wizard. Will there be a division of Elders that decide to defect and
form their own sect against Wyatt and the Charmed Ones?
What other types of consequences will occur since the future has been
changed? Will other demons, such as Barbas come after Wyatt knowing that he can
be turned bad?
The biggest question that the audience was left with seems to be, now what?
While we all know that the series was picked up for another two years, it would
almost seem like this episode would have been the ideal place to leave off with
the Charmed Ones Saga. With the knowledge that Wyatt was not going to be evil,
Piper had given birth to a health Chris, Leo was going to be looking out for
his family and both Phoebe and Paige were good aunts, if you will a “Happily
Ever After” ending. So the question begging to be asked…now what? Well
fellow Charmed viewers we can only sit back and know that it will be
very good, very good indeed.
