NOTE: This review may contain plot spoilers.
Before I start, I just want to wish
everyone a very Happy New Year! I hope you all have a great
2007 :)
Way back in 1999, one of the first
Charmed fan fictions I wrote was called Forget Me, Phoebe.
The plot dealt with Phoebe accidentally losing her memory
and the Halliwell’s then nemesis, Rex Buckland, taking
advantage of the situation. Now an idea similar to mine
has been professionally written. I must say that I enjoyed
this book, for the most part.
While fighting some
rather nasty Demons (called Flecters), Phoebe gets separated
from Piper and Paige. Before she can return to her sisters,
Phoebe is hit by a powerful spell, that causes her to lose
her memory. She has no idea who she is, or who her sisters
are. After wandering around for a while, Phoebe is
befriended by a witch called Aura. Aura claims to know
Phoebe as someone named “Ruth”. She takes the amnesiac
Phoebe back to her home, where they met Aura’s two friends,
Delilah and Terra. It seems that Aura, Delilah, and Terra
have an agenda of their own, and they are using Phoebe to
help achieve that agenda.
Meanwhile, Piper
and Paige are having problems of their own. Aside from a
missing sister, they are being assaulted constantly by the
Flecter Demons. They need The Power Of Three to vanquish
said Demons, but how can they do it without Phoebe?
I liked most of this
book, as the confused Phoebe blindly trusts her new friends
at first. However, as the plot continues, Phoebe begins to
suspect that Aura and her two friends are not as they seem.
However, she cannot put everything together, which the three
evil witches count on (shouldn’t Aura and her friends be
called Warlocks, since they are witches gone bad, but I
digress). As the plot continues, Phoebe does question the
methods of Aura and the others, but cannot bring herself to
outright confront them. After all, they are the only people
she knows in her current state of mind.
However, there is one thing about this book
that I didn’t like. It featured a plot device that I grew to
hate on the television show, fairy tale characters. This book
has leprechauns, fairies, wood nymphs, you name it. However,
these characters only play a small part in the overall story, so
I can live with that. The reasons these characters are there is
because they have heard of Phoebe’s Advice Column and want her
to help them with their own relationships! Yep, it seems that
Ask Phoebe is just as popular in the magical world as it is in
the mortal world!
Some other points:
-still no sign of Big
Chris.
-Daryl is actually in
this book, which is nice. Hopefully, the books will keep him
around, and not drop him like the show did.
-Leo also gets lots to
do in this book, which I greatly liked.
-I have to wonder about
where the author got the names for some of the characters that
appear in this book: Aura, Delilah, Terra, Nayla, and Maribel.
This really shouts SAN FRANCISCO all over it!
-the subplot with Piper
and Paige battling the Flecter Demons was well done. It’s
interesting to see the Charmed Ones fight evil on two fronts.
In this case, neither evil they are fighting is allied with the
other, but rather just had the bad luck to show up at the same
time.
-Phoebe’s reaction when
she realizes that the evil witches named her “Ruth” was
priceless.
Anyway, I liked this
book. I give it an 8/10.
