BOOK: Sweet Talkin'
Demon
AUTHOR: Laura J. Burns
NOTE: This review may contain plot spoilers.
Well, as you
all know by now, the television series has come to an end. This
means that from this point on, the only new "episodes"
of Charmed that will be made are the books. I want to inform you
all that as long as they keep making them, I plan to keep
reviewing them. Hopefully, the book series will enjoy a nice
long run, even though the show is now gone (after all, they are
still putting out Buffy books, and that show has been over for
three years now).
Anyway, in this book,
Phoebe has a new guy in her life, his name is Daniel Lemond.
Daniel is a curious fellow. Sometimes he can be very charming,
while at other times he seems like an awkward geek. Phoebe
cannot understand why she keeps being attracted to him. Paige
and Piper get curious as well, and while checking out Daniel’s
apartment, Paige thinks she sees a Demon there. Could history be
repeating itself, could Phoebe be in love with yet another
Demon? Or is there something else going on here.
At that same time, Piper
is getting very frustrated with Leo. He is spending more and
more time away from home, looking after his latest charge. Piper
is trying to arrange an anniversary dinner for the two of them,
but Leo keeps canceling on her. Can Piper make Leo finally
settle down and have a nice dinner with her, before things get
even more tense between them?
Finally, Paige has her own
problems. When Wyatt has a bad cold, Paige whips up a spell to
get rid of it. She tells herself that it is not for personal
gain, after all, she is helping Piper and Leo, but karma comes
back to haunt her. Instead of getting rid of the cold, it
transfers to someone else in the family. Every time Paige uses
the spell to banish the cold, another Halliwell ends up getting
it. Paige has broken the No Personal Gain rule and now that has
come back to haunt her.
Well, I must say that I really
enjoyed this book. Once again we got a well written tale of the
Charmed Ones getting into a mystery and using their brains to
solve it. Despite some misgivings at first when I read the
title, this is not Phoebe and Cole revisited. I went into this
book wondering about that and found something else entirely. I
must say good job to the author for pulling this off.
Once again it’s good to see
the No Personal Gain rule being taken seriously. While the
writers of the show seemed to have tossed that out a long time
ago, the writers of the books have not. Funny how the books seem
to follow the rules more than the show ever did.
Some other points:
-still no sign of Chris yet.
-Cole is mentioned in this book.
Considering the storyline, I would have been very surprised if
he hadn’t been mentioned.
-Daryl does not appear in this
book. Hmmm, this is the third book in a row not to have Daryl in
it. Let’s hope this ends soon. Like I have said before, the
books do not have to worry about an actor being available.
-there is a nice scene of Paige
meeting Leo’s new, and somewhat scatterbrained, charge, a
young girl named Kerria. Paige does the mentor role well here.
-finally, this book does contain
a blooper. On page 87, Paige is mentioned as getting ready to
throw a fireball. Paige can throw fireballs? Since when!? Looks
like the author made a small boo-boo here!
Anyway, this is a very good
book, and I think you will enjoy it.
I give it a 9/10.
