The Importance of Being Phoebe: Originality

"In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different."
--Coco Chanel

When looking up "individuality" at thesaurus.com one would find these different words: individualism, idiosyncrasy, identity, independence, originality, and uniqueness. All words that define a specific person, the definition of which all mean something unique.

In fact Phoebe’s uniqueness is what helps clue in Cole on who he is dealing with when a Phoebe walks into the room. The biggest problem with allowing Cole this distinction only goes to further prove that Cole is indeed so madly in love with Phoebe that he can tell an imposter from the real thing. Even Piper, Paige and Leo weren’t able to tell the fake Phoebe from the real one, yes they had their suspicions, but didn’t once contribute it to an imposter possibility.

In this episode we were give such an in-depth plot, but not much of a complete finish. The only reason someone would want to check the time on this episode would be because it seemed that there was just too much left to resolve in such a short hour. In fact, the amount of information that was given for this episode left many dangling plots that we can only hope will be answered in next week’s episode.

Again, I say that Charmed has started coming back towards that of earlier season. The formula of success has started reshaping in this second half of the season. Yes, we still have the Phoebe/Cole storyline, but other aspects of the Charmed Ones are shinning through too; the danger of the underworld rising, the actual threat of legal issues, and the personal relationships between the sisters and others is all being played out.

Please don’t understand wrong, I don’t think we’ve had too much Cole/Phoebe and many do not find the eventual resolution wanted or acceptable, but since the writers painted themselves into a corner it is what we must allow. True, many would have rather seen the fall of Cole be the vanquishing of last season and not have such a desperate debauchery of the Cole/Phoebe relationship that we all once loved. But since there is no other option left for the writers, this is what must be done.

"My dear Algy, you talk exactly as if you were a dentist. It is very vulgar to talk like a dentist when one isn’t a dentist. It produces a false impression."

-The Importance of Being Earnest

This episode was a great showcase for Alyssa Milano. Not only did she do a convincing job of pretending to be someone else pretending to be her, but also she still portrayed the real Phoebe believably. Credit needs to be given to Ms. Milano and film editors for not making it preposterous to have two Phoebe’s fighting themselves. In fact, the fight scene was more above par then the normal scenes that we are usually given. Indeed, crashing into walls and pictures gave it the added destruction quality that one looks for in a fierce fighting scene.

Kudos should also be given to the writers for finally coming up with a convincible way for the weakening of the Charmed Ones. Using the law against them was a stroke of genius. Since it wasn’t the raw power of the Charmed Ones that evil was fighting it was able to strike down the sisters by inflicting a little human world law. If in fact, the series ever ends, it would be fitting for the sisters to be beaten (if that may be the case) by something this simple. Cole, who knows the law, was able to considerably weaken them. This is something that hasn’t been done in the past, but was completely believable since Cole knows the sisters and their weaknesses.

Many are not looking forward to the 100th episode, simply for the reason of a character departure (fair game in me saying this since they warned us in the preview for next week), yet it should be an exciting interesting episode. I’ll venture to bet it will be one of the best episodes of this season.

Be honest with yourself, even if you don’t like how the storyline is going, it has been wonderful to see such strong acting from our cast of characters. Pipers, Cole, Phoebe and even Paige have been giving strong performances. The expectation of next week is exciting for the pure factor that we know it will be compelling and noteworthy. This series has given us something noteworthy to discuss and analyze for at least two weeks, that is something that is more than welcome. Let me know your thoughts and grips about the show.

Discussion about the departure of one of our favorites is welcome, but remember not everyone knows who the particular person leaving is and they do want to be a little surprised! So please, be kind, be considerate.

This-and-That:

  • Once again, I must question the costume designers of the series! Ms. Milano was almost naked!! And someone please tell me what that yellow thing Paige was wearing was supposed to be.
  • So even the earth can’t hold Cole, what will stop him?
  • Want to reiterate the fact that using the law was a very good plot point. It was also redeeming to see Lt. Morris not just push aside the law to help his friends, but try to really uphold the sacredness of it as well.
  • One point that a viewer emailed us about: I’ve been referring to Dorian Gregory’s character Det. Morris (now Lieutenant) as Morse, which is incorrect. Thanks for the correct spelling!
