Robert Rodriguez reteams with Rose McGowan in 'Red Sonja'
By Susan Wloszczyna, USA TODAY

Red Sonja is back.

And Robert Rodriguez has her.

The Grindhouse co-director will produce a new big-screen adventure featuring the flame-haired comic-book vixen. While Brigitte Nielsen wielded Sonja's sword in the poorly received 1985 version, Rodriguez's Planet Terror zombie slayer and real-life leading lady, Rose McGowan, will wiggle into the metal mesh bikini in the 2010 release.

"I was surprised when Rose brought me a script of Red Sonja that she liked," Rodriguez says from his home base of Austin, where he is shooting Shorts, a family film with James Spader and Jon Cryer. "I found it very entertaining. Sonja was strong, smart, cunning - just about everything she'd have to be to survive."

McGowan's initial impulse when offered the part? To laugh.
"When they first came to me with it, I thought it was funny," says the actress, 34. "I do have a body made for sitting on a veranda with mint juleps and a parasol. I don't know why I always have to save the planet."

Rodriguez considers her a perfect fit as the mighty, and mighty voluptuous, avenger. "Rose is a pistol. She's whip-smart, has attitude to burn, is sexy, extremely strong, yet has a vulnerable side that would surprise her closest friends. That description also fits Red Sonja."

Not that his star isn't committed to the whole barbarian babe concept, including the crimson locks.
"I do have a very scrappy-do personality," says McGowan, who will undergo intense training before filming starts in October. "I lean toward physicality. The story has characters trashed by life who fight their way back. That is my theme."

Unlike her one-legged Planet Terror heroine, she assures, "I need all my limbs for this."
McGowan and Rodriguez have not seen Nielsen in the original, and they have no plans to catch up. As the actress explains, "Why put that in my head?"

Instead, the origin story, to be directed by longtime Rodriguez associate Douglas Aarniokoski, will take its cues from the comic books as well as works by pulp novelist Robert E. Howard, father of the original Sonja (then spelled Sonya) and Conan the Barbarian (also undergoing a movie revival).
"Howard's goal was always, first and foremost, to spin a good yarn and to entertain," says Rodriguez, who is hoping his Red Sonja turns into a franchise. "That's our goal."

MORE: Production is set to begin in October of this year. Locations are being scouted in Michigan and throughout the United States. The film is set to hit theaters in 2010.

'Women in Chains!' to Fill Networks' Long-Standing Rose McGowan/Mud Wrestling Vacuum
by Defamer.com, May 28, 2008

Even though Rose McGowan and Robert Rodriguez have yet to shoot their planned Barbarella remake - which is going to start any day now if McGowan's recent fantasy promise holds- they're wasting little time moving forward with their next classy genre collaboration: Women in Chains! No, seriously, that's what they're actually calling it.

Director Robert Rodriguez is shopping around Women in Chains! a violent drama set at a woman's prison starring his fiancee, Rose McGowan. ...

McGowan is set to play one of five chained women at the center of the show, which Rodriguez is expected to direct. The two first worked together on last year's Planet Terror, Rodriguez's homage to 1970s exploitation flicks.

The new show also is rumored to be fashioned with a 1970s exploitation sensibility, with such staples like mud wrestling.

We're told there are scripts circulating - with dialogue and exposition in actual English - at networks including NBC and FX, where the market for prime-time exploitation dramas apparently surged when we weren't looking. We didn'tt think anything could shake McGowan from her single-minded alien ambitions from a month ago, but! Seeing as those Barbarella spaceships are only half-built and she can make a mud pit in about 15 minutes flat, we can't really blame her for compromising. A woman - even one in chains - has gotta eat, right?

Alyssa Milano circles ABC pilot
By Nellie Andreeva    April 25, 2008

Alyssa Milano and Nathan Fillion are in negotiations for the respective leads in two ABC pilots: the untitled Kristin Newman comedy (now called "Single with Parents") and drama presentation "Castle."

Additionally, Tom Hollander has joined CBS' drama presentation "The Meant to Be's," and Aunjanue Ellis has come aboard ABC's drama pilot "Prince of Motor City."

The untitled Newman project, from ABC Studios, is a single-camera comedy that centers on a thirty-something woman (Milano) who tries to break free of her overbearing and dysfunctional family, friends and boss.

"Charmed" alumna Milano recurs on NBC's "My Name Is Earl" and is seen on the big screen in MGM's "Pathology."

Milano, who recently starred in and produced the highly rated Lifetime movie "Wisegal," is repped by CAA and attorney Bill Skrzyniarz.

"Castle," from ABC Studios, is a comedic procedural about a famous mystery novelist (Fillion) helping the NYPD solve crimes.

Fillion recurs on ABC's "Desperate Housewives" and recently wrapped the feature "Chilled in Miami."

"Meant," from CBS Par, is a romantic drama about a young woman (Amy Smart) who dies, but in order to "pass over," she must return to Earth and help people improve their lives. Hollander will play the head of the Fate division who is bending the rules to save lives.

Hollander recently wrapped DreamWorks' "The Soloist" and next will be seen in "Valkyrie." He is repped by UTA, U.K.-based Independent agency and attorney Carlos Goodman.

"Prince," from ABC Studios, is a gothic family soap inspired by William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" set in the world of the Detroit auto industry. Ellis (Fox's "Justice") will play a manipulative board member of the automotive company at the center of the show.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Beau Bridges joining Alyssa Milano in one show and Jay Harrington taking the lead in the other. The Fresco pilot centers on Harrington's character, a decent guy who's the head of research and development for a not-very-decent corporation. The show has also added Malcolm Barrett ("The Sketch Show") and Jonathan Slavin (Fresco's "Andy Richter Controls the Universe") as two of Harrington's co-workers. Also added to the cast is Annie Potts.

Brian Krause in SCI-FI Original Movie
Ian Spelling, Sci-Fi - April 2008

Brian Krause, who stars in the upcoming SCI FI original movie Warbirds, told SCI FI Wire that the film is set during World War II and blends action and SF.

Krause (Charmed) stars as an Air Force colonel being ferried on a secret mission across the Pacific when a pterdodactyl attack forces his bomber and its all-female crew to land on a remote island.

"On that island, we run into the Japanese, who have been terrorized by a prehistoric reptile, pterodactyls who have kind of taken over the island," Krause said in an interview. "We need to get off the ground and escape from the pterodactyls so that I can finish my mission. The woman I'm playing opposite, Jamie Mann, is part of the flying force. She has a whole issue about us taking off and risking losing the lives of her crew."

Krause's U.S. officer also has a Japanese counterpart, played by Japanese-American actor Tohoru Masamune. "And so we kind of have to work together- the Japanese, the Americans, the women--and find a middle ground to be able to save our lives and get off the island, all the while fighting the pterodactyls," he said.

Krause admitted that the cast and crew never left the United States, though Warbirds is set in the South Pacific. "We were out in Baton Rouge, La., in middle of summer, at night, out in the bush," Krause said. "We were sweating out in the bush at 3 in the morning. I hadn't been there since Katrina, and it was nice to be able to put some money back into the economy." Warbirds premiered April 19, check listing on the website for upcoming showings.

Charmed is one of those great shows you can catch on TV late at night, and you expect it to be on when nothing else is. It is packed full of humor that almost anyone can relate to, and includes problems that real people can actually understand. Rather than watching some crazy soap opera with twisted story lines, Charmed brings out the humor in everyday live even just by sitting in a coffee shop and chatting with friends.

For a television series about the supernatural, Charmed kept audiences glued not just because of all the action and the fantasy, but also with the more commonplace relationships and struggles of the Halliwell sisters. With the show, producer Aaron Spelling again proved that he knew the formula for TV success: an attractive cast (in this case, led by an irresistible trio of beautiful actresses), a good premise, an ever-twisting plot, and good old family drama.

Created by Constance Burge, Charmed revolves around three sisters who discover their destiny to become the "Charmed Ones" or the world's most powerful good witches. Their powers are passed down to them from their mother's bloodline and only start to manifest after their maternal grandmother dies. A series of events set in motion a new life for the Halliwell's. They begin to balance harnessing and developing their supernatural abilities, fighting evil elements along the way, and dealing with their everyday issues of life and love. Obviously, the show had enough 'charm' to hold the record as one of the most-watched first-season debuts on the WB, that is, until the debut of Smallville. The show started in 1998 and lasted eight full seasons, culminating in 2006. Brad Kern produced the show with Aaron Spelling.

Charmed Hits a (Final) Milestone
by Matt Webb Mitovich - TVGuide.com - Jan. 20,2006

With its Jan. 22 broadcast, WB's Charmed (Sundays at 8 pm/ET) - which premiered Oct. 7, 1998 - becomes the longest-running television series boasting all female leads, having bewitched viewers for more years than such estrogen-heavy fare as Laverne & Shirley, Designing Women and Sex and the City. To mark the milestone, TVGuide.com sat down with executive producer Brad Kern to assess the show's assets, assay the avidness of its fans and conjure up a peek at its future - no matter how (gulp!) finite it may be.
