The Mummy’s Tomb: Comeback.
"Scratch a lover and find a foe." Welcome back to a new and improved season of Charmed! Forget the folly of
last fall; sit back and enjoy the new ride. Indeed, it seems that this episode
of Charmed has tapped into the goodness of seasons’ past to help us wipe away
the previous eight episodes. Back were the action packed fight scenes, an interesting storyline with a
compelling demon, more sister interaction, Detective Morse and Leo time, and
most importantly, not too much Cole/Phoebe interaction. There are many things that stand out in this episode, but the best must be
the terrific fight scene between Piper and Cole. The simple indestructibleness
of the two characters was refreshing (viewers didn’t have to worry that one of
them would actually get hurt). Seeing Piper upset and Cole as her outlet of
frustration was appropriate, not to mention fun. Yes, Piper cannot vanquish
Cole, but she can hurt him. Another wonderful aspect of this episode was the addition of guest star,
Adrian Paul (Many might have recognized him from his days on Highlander).
His presence is always powerful, but in combination with Julian McMahon’s
portrayal of Cole’s madness it was mesmerizing. The biggest complaint would
have to be not enough screen time allowed for these two superb actors. Paul was both notably menacing and interesting enough to portray a demon that
was an actual threat to the Charmed Ones. In fact, the time spent together on
screen of the sisters was both welcomed and needed. Many of the viewers had been
upset that the interaction between the sisters still felt a little cardboard and
stiff. With this episode, the stiffness was gone and the interaction between the
three sisters was very believable; finally it seems that Rose McGowan is a part
of the onscreen cast. So not only did the episode cover the threat to the Charmed Ones, show some
of the best fight scenes this season, and have a good demon; it also had the
comedy relief that has been associated to Charmed in the past. Piper’s
pregnancy has been a consistent observation that is mentioned in almost every
episode. The fact that she is beginning to show and doesn’t want to have
people touching her stomach or wearing frilly clothes is understandable and
funny to many people, especially women who are already mothers. Added to the pregnancy comedy was the interaction between Leo and Det. Morse.
The obvious comedic talent that these actors create on screen makes a viewer
wonder if it exists off camera in a friendship as well. Overall this episode was pure Charmed; it should be very interesting
to see the rest of the season play out. The Cole storyline was put back on the
front burner with his involvement and manipulation in this episode. Piper’s
anger towards Cole is very evident, and it seems that she will probably put
herself on a mission on how to vanquish him. Cole’s madness is going to be an obstacle for the sisters in the future, we
can assume. Since they all think they understand how Cole operates they will
expect him to do certain things. With his madness, however, it will probably
lead him to do a variety of things in a hap-hazardous way. The fight between the
sisters and Cole should be very interesting indeed. Overall, the viewers couldn’t have asked for a better "welcome
back" to the season. Finally, it seems that the series we all loved has
begun to come back to the direction it was going at the end of season three. This-and-That:
