"Soul Survivor"
By Julie Burk

I was really impressed with this episode as a whole. I thought the main plot was interesting, and when you add that to the fact that we saw an innocent be saved (well, his soul, anyhow) for the first time all season, I am one happy camper.

Paige: While I love it when Paige takes the initiative to save an innocent, I don’t understand why she is so insistent she does it alone. I also do not  understand why Piper and Phoebe have not learned to trust Paige’s instincts by now. They have seen this kind of thing before, in Wrestling With Demons, and I thought they agreed at the end it was worth the trouble to save an innocent’s soul.

Despite Paige’s foolishness in taking on Zahn alone, I was disappointed with  how Piper and Phoebe treated her. They seemed to be ganging up on her, and  Piper especially was unfair to her. Although last season, and early in this season, it seemed that the three had become closer as sisters, Love’s a Witch and Soul Survivor seemed to drive them apart, first with Phoebe barging in where Paige didn’t want her, then with Piper and Phoebe not helping when Paige wanted them to.

I also have to add that Larry got the shaft on his deal with Zahn. Let me get this straight. In exchange for five years of success, Larry received eternal damnation? Way to bargain, Larry.

Phoebe: I really disliked Phoebe’s subplot. Has the personal gain rule flown right out the window? Although Phoebe turned Spencer Ricks into a turkey in House Call, she was under a spell. This episode, she had no excuse, and what she did in Soul Survivor reeked of personal gain. How can there be no consequences? I think the writers had a great opportunity here to remind the viewers, as well as the sisters, of the backlashes that could result from using magic for personal gain.

My fingers are crossed that Spencer Ricks won’t become a regular on the show, because he really is a pig.

Piper: Poor Piper! As if it wouldn’t be hard enough to date again after a horrible divorce, she has to deal with her 10-month-old baby giving her dates “orb-eyes.” (Sorry, they never explained what he was really doing there, so that is what I will call it.) Those guys were serious wusses though, if that made them run off like that. If it had been me standing there looking at Wyatt’s orb-eyes, I’d have stood there stammering like an idiot, demanding to know what was going on. But it was really funny, especially since Piper had no idea what was going on.

But count me as a passenger on the “get back with Leo” train. I still think that it is too soon for Piper to be dating. I can’t help but be curious (but don’t tell me, I’m spoiler free!) as to how the writers will deal with Holly Marie Combs’ pregnancy. Am I the only one who will be totally bummed if the new baby isn’t Leo’s?

Chris and Leo: Although I had really been dreading the dinosaurs, it actually wasn’t that bad, since it wasn’t the main part of the story. Chris seemed especially benevolent in this episode, especially when he saved Leo from the dinosaur right after Leo told him he would leave him if he had the chance. Chris confused me a little, since in past episodes he has seemed just this side of evil. Hopefully we will find out soon what he is up to.Leo acted very out of character in this episode. It just didn’t seem like Leo to leap blindly through a time portal without knowing what was on the other side. What was he thinking?

I also felt like I missed something when one minute Leo and Chris were surrounded by Confederate soldiers, and the next they were in the club. I suppose we were supposed to assume they orbed to the club, but I still felt a little lost, and would have enjoyed seeing them escape from the Confederates.

Their powers: Whoa! Phoebe got a new power? Where did that come from? I know that she channeled Piper’s powers in the season premier, but when did she learn to channel a demon’s powers? I wish they had elaborated a bit more on how this change came about. Phoebe didn’t even look surprised when she vanquished the demon. And where did her empathy power go? Just two episodes it was out of control. It seems like when Piper and Paige took the blocking potion they totally eliminated her power. And I miss her premonitions!

I also really miss Piper’s freezing power. It is my second favorite of all the powers (Orbing is my first favorite power. I so wish I could do this!) and we have only seen it once this season, despite the fact that there were several times it would have come in handy.

It’s all in the details:
For once, I have nothing bad to say about the clothes. They were all subdued and, well, normal. What was with Phoebe’s booby shot at the end of the show? If you didn’t notice, watch when Piper and Phoebe are chatting in the club. Also, get to your optometrist and have your eyes checked.
