| Although this episode was funny and
interesting, because we got to see Grams back when she was young, it
lacked the development that Chris Crossed gave us. I love time travel
episodes, and the sixties were one my favorite time periods, but this
episode was really just a filler. We didn’t find out any more about
Chris or about Piper’s baby.
But I really loved seeing Grams again, and seeing what she was like
when she was younger, although I had never thought of her as a peace
loving hippy. However, seeing Young Grams brought a question to my mind:
how old is Grams, exactly? Because if my calculations are right
(and it is very possible that they aren’t) Grams was in her forties
when the sisters went back to 1975, putting her in her thirties in
Witchstock. I think that the time line would have worked a lot better if
they had made Patty the hippy, as Prue was born in 1971. I had heard
that the episode was originally meant for Patty, and I wish they would
have stuck with that. Either that, or make Grams a few years older or
set the episode in the 1950s. Time line nitpicks aside, the episode was
nice. Fluffy, but nice.
Phoebe
Who besides me saw the trouble that comes with living separately a
mile away? Anybody? Oh, so you all did. Hmm...I’m pretty sure that
this isn’t a permanent thing, although I have to wonder why Phoebe
even moved to Hong Kong in the first place, as she mentioned origami (a
Japanese craft, by the way) about three times and Jason once. I thought
the writers were going too far with the "Hong Kong"
stereotypes: putting Phoebe in a Chinese outfit, having her do origami
and quote Chinese proverbs. Seriously, I get that she lives in Hong
Kong, you can quit pounding it into my head. I did think that Phoebe
looked really cute in her outfit at the beginning. (Not when she went
back to the ‘60s though, that was awful.) I also like her hair more,
now that it has grown out a little. It suits her. She looks like a
little pixie.
Paige
Why exactly won’t Paige use magick in front of Richard? And why
doesn’t she want him to use it? I still don’t get it. I understand
that she thinks the last time he used magick he went crazy, but as I
didn’t see much craziness (he thought his mom died, for goodness sake)
it doesn’t make any sense to me. I really liked Paige’s outfit
throughout the episode. The subtle clothes suit her well, and even
matched the boots. I did resent her remark about the ‘60s being the
worst fashion era, as I love the clothes. If she had said the ‘80s, I
would have agreed with her. (Ugh, leg warmers and spandex, shudder) I
liked the fact that after only a few minutes in the past she was really
starting to "dig" the time. "Right on!"
Piper
I have heard a lot of complaints that Holly Marie Combs’ acting
wasn’t up to snuff in this episode, but I disagree. I think she was
going for "sad and resigned" throughout the episode, as in the
last year Piper’s life has really started to, well, to suck. She lost
her husband and her two sisters moved out all within the year. How
depressing is that?
Although they did a good job of hiding her pregnancy in this episode,
much more so than in the past few, I was so distracted by looking for it
that I wish they would hurry up and out with it!
I loved her spell to attract the cop when she and Phoebe were in
jail. That was one of the better spells I have heard in quite some time.
"Trust me mister, she’s my sister!" I liked her delivery on
this one.
Leo
Hippy Leo cracked me up. Seriously, when Hippy Leo came on the screen
the first time I started laughing so hard I missed what happened next.
Although this was a fun alternate Leo, I have a hard time believing he
was ever like that. Did you notice that Young Grams seemed to be kind of
creeped out by him, too, and sympathized with Paige after Leo hit on
her? That was great.
Normal Leo and Chris seem to be really bonding well. Hmm...wonder if
this means anything? Guess we’ll have to wait and see. I loved
watching Grams lay into Chris about his inexperience. "Are you
giving me lip?" Ha! I love Grams!
I don’t even know what to think about Black Panther Darryl - I
mean, Luther. It was funny, but I think they could have found a better
wig!
I really miss the days when the sisters had real dilemmas when it
came to vanquishing evil beings. That blob (I loved how Grams pointed
out the ridiculousness of no one in the future naming the thing) seemed
pretty unbeatable, then the sisters came in and kind of muttered,
"I call upon the power of three" and the slime was gone. They
didn’t even have to strain their brains for a real spell. I hope in
some future episodes we see some seriously scary demons again, like Shax
or The Source. Now THEY were demons. You never saw them slip on a pile
of marbles and vanquish themselves. |
