As it seems that our American television is slowly being overrun
with reality shows, it would seem like a logical conclusion to any writer in
the television industry to do a “spoof” or twist on what their fiction show
would be like with a bit of reality thrown in the mix.
At first, it seemed like all Charmed might have been trying to
accomplish was to boost rating by using the reality twist as something that
would attract those that enjoy the reality television, but once again, our Charmed
writers were able to take something that is seemly becoming more outrageous and
turn it into fun fiction television.
Witch Wars
Now it seems a little far fetched that an Elder would rely on demons to
accomplish his goals, but since we still are not sure exactly what Gideon’s
goals are we can’t judge the man without know all the details. However, it is
saying something that he actually went to demons to try and point the suspicion
away from him and the school as the evil that corrupts Wyatt in the future.
Paige and Chris didn’t have much to do in this episode accept to figure
out that the sister’s were in a reality game. Even when this is figured out,
Paige isn’t the one that gets to vanquish the demons, but simply the “bait”
to lure the demons out into the open.
The concept of reality television in the magical world isn’t really a
stretch considering how much it has grown and infested our everyday television
worlds. Really, without extreme hard thinking, can I come up with another
drama/comedy that has mixed their characters into a world that has the
characters in reality television. This really says something for those that
think reality may be dying, it seems that is anything but further from the
truth.
Piper and Phoebe’s Obsession
The fact that Piper, Leo, Chris and Phoebe are consumed with finding out who
turned Wyatt towards evil is righteous and justified; Piper, Leo, and Chris
more so than Phoebe because they are an actual part of the nuclei family.
Phoebe’s obsession with finding the corrupter is looking like the nail that
hit the hammer on the head. It will come as a great surprise to this viewer if
it isn’t Phoebe who figures out that Gideon is out for Wyatt; the only way
that might not happen is if someone else stumbles upon Gideon during an act
that will betray his intentions.
The fact that Phoebe is thinking outside of the box and looking at the “kidnapping”
of Wyatt’s good is a unique and reasonable way to approach the problem. This
is something that helps further the characterization of Phoebe because it
allows the viewers see her working on something tangible and getting an outcome
that corporeal. Following the steps of the police or FBI allows for Phoebe to
be able to recognize all of the threats and figure out which one will be
identifiable as the reason that Wyatt changes.
The most frustrating fact of the entire ending of this episode is the fact
that if Wyatt was truly not hurt then Chris would not have continued to have
the memories that he has and in fact may have simply vanished not coming back
from the future to begin with (think Frequency). It should be most
interesting to see if the girls figure out at the end of this season that
Gideon is the opponent, or if the writers will continue this storyline on into
next season.
